A Quiet Place In The Storm

It is no secret that things are different right now. For many we are seeking some sense of normalcy, a distraction from the noise or any sense of calm in this storm. At a time where we are all spending more hours at home than ever before, it is important to have a sanctuary where you can sit and reflect, read, meditate or even work in peace.

Whether it is with acquiring new items (thank goodness for online shopping!) or rearranging what you have, here are some simple tips to create the perfect getaway without leaving your home!

Light – A main staple in all areas of life is light. It is often highlighted in any mention of interior design, not just for the way it can make a room feel larger or accentuate colors, but because of the way it makes us feel. When sunlight hits your skin it triggers the body’s production of Vitamin D, also referred to as the sunshine vitamin. This important vitamin protects against inflammation, lowers high blood pressure, helps muscles and improves brain function. Natural light also helps to maintain your body’s clock, which is vital in times where your routine may be disrupted. So when locating the best area for your sanctuary, look for a spot with a lot of natural sunlight.

Comfort – As the temperatures heat up outside, your air conditioning may be working overtime inside. Surround your space with plush pillows, your favorite throw blanket and a chair that envelops you. Enjoying the warmth of the sun? Select a woven basket to store your throw blanket and extra pillows in while keeping them close by. This is a great way to introduce natural materials while creating storage and ensures your oasis does not feel cluttered. Clutter is known to increase tension and anxiety levels and can leave you feeling overwhelmed. A small end table or shelving unit can house a few books and a picture or two of your loved ones. Remember to keep the trinkets in this space to a minimum.

Color – Imagine you just stepped foot into a day spa, what do you see? Luxurious drapes, glowing candles and calming colors including lavender, soft greens and greys and pale blues.  In addition to surrounding yourself with natural light and items that bring you comfort, color plays an equally important role in creating your sanctuary. While you may not currently be using this color palate in the rest of your home, bringing in these cool toned neutrals can create needed separation. If you are only able to carve out a corner of a room, think about hanging drapes that can be used to close off your little oasis while you are using it. You can also incorporate these tranquil colors with your furniture, blankets, pillows or rug.

Plants – While it is important to get outside, the options to do so may be very limited for many of us. Adding plants to your design have more benefits than you can imagine! Studies have shown the use of indoor plants can boost your mood, productivity, concentration and creativity. They purify the air by absorbing toxins and producing oxygen.  Plants have also been found to lower heart rates and blood pressure as well as reduce fatigue and anxiety levels. Not to mention the added visual appeal plants and flowers add to indoor environments.

With so many unknowns one thing is for sure, this time of isolation will end and life will return to something that looks a little more familiar. And in the meantime, let’s make the most of our time at home, soak up as much sun as possible, and find some room for quiet in this storm.
